Be a human being rather than a human doing
“Be a human being rather than a human doing.”
When I first heard this, I thought it was a really wonderful saying. To me, this means when you get comfortable in your own skin, you’re able to feel good about yourself, regardless of your environment, your accomplishments, or your material wealth.
This was very attractive to me because I had no accomplishments, no wealth and very few friends. My life wasn’t comfortable.
And yet, in the back of my mind, there was something wrong with this and I found myself fighting this simple saying.
As I progressed with my journey of self improvement, I realized it’s in doing things that I have accomplishments. As a result of accomplishments I get a sense of satisfaction.
Accomplishments give me self-esteem and prove my self-efficacy.
Also when I am doing things, I am getting out into the world meeting and interacting with the people around me. I like people.
Since then my life has become a series of accomplishments. I’ve become a human doing rather than a human being.
My experiences corroborate your post. We can get there quickly with language. Adopting e prime and eliminating all tenses of the verb “to be” from writing and speech will help a great deal. All tenses of “to be” at best describe doing…so why bother? No self…no need for self esteem.
I sincerely believe the good things you do and the people you try to help along the way makes you a human being. The only thing that would keep you a human-doing is if all your efforts were based on greed.
I wanted to thank you for this excellent read!! I definitely enjoyed every little bit of it. I have bookmarked your site to check out the new stuff you post.
Did you create your own blog or did a program do it? Could you please respond?
I wrote the entire site’s coding from scratch one night while I was watching a movie and talking on the phone. I’m a genius you know.
Damn spammers will try anything to get a link to their sites. I removed the link.
